The symptoms of TMJ can affect your ability to sleep, eat, and concentrate on work. If TMJ symptoms are keeping you from living a healthy, happy life, our experienced team at Health for Life Chiropractic can help. We can help relieve your TMJ symptoms and prevent them from recurring with our safe, all-natural TMJ treatment in Douglasville

Evaluating Your TMJ Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of TMJ can vary from person to person, and you may not experience all of the symptoms at the same time. Our chiropractor, Dr. Hattaway, will first ask you questions and take a health history to determine what your symptoms are, how often they occur, how severe they are, and how they’re affecting your daily life. This may help him establish a pattern of symptoms that he’ll use in designing your TMJ treatment plan. For instance, if your symptoms are worse when you wake up in the morning, it may be because you’re grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw in your sleep.

Finding the Underlying Cause of Your TMJ

To begin, Dr. Hattaway will do a physical exam and may take x-rays or a CT scan or MRI to determine if there are any complications or an underlying cause for your symptoms other than TMJ. Dr. Hattaway may feel your jaw as you open and close your mouth and listen for clicking or popping noises that are often present with TMJ. He may observe the range of motion in your jaw and gently touch certain areas to determine if they are tender or painful. X-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI can determine if there are any problems with the jawbone, the temporomandibular joint, the disc, or the surrounding tissue.

Developing a TMJ Treatment Plan

Once Dr. Hattaway has more information about your TMJ symptoms and your health, he will design a TMJ treatment plan specifically for you. TMJ treatment may consist of a variety of different therapies designed to treat specific symptoms and side effects of TMJ, and also prevent it from recurring or lessen its effects. Dr. Hattaway typically recommends:

  • Chiropractic
  • Therapeutic massage
  • Heat and cold therapy
  • Laser therapy
  • Environmental modification
